Modular Sculpture

Investigation #3

Our third investigation will be a combination of modular sculpture and installation art. To start, each of you will create two different modular units. We will then take everyone’s modular units and collaborate to assemble them together to create ONE WHOLE LARGE SCULPTURE. This sculpture will then be installed in one or more locations around the school building. Our MODULAR SCULPTURE UNITS will become INSTALLATION ART.

You may be wondering… what does this look like????? Here are some examples:

What is Modular Art?

Modular art is art created by joining together standardized units (modules) to form larger, more complex compositions. In some works the units can be subsequently moved, removed and added to – that is, modulated – to create a new work of art, different from the original or ensuing configurations.

You have been creating modular art since you were a little kid! Did you play with building blocks? Legos? You were creating modular sculptures!

What is Installation Art?

Installation art describes an artistic genre of three-dimensional works that are often site-specific and designed to transform the perception of a space. Generally, the term is applied to interior spaces.
As a team, we will have to decide – What interior space in the school would we like to transform with our collaborative modular sculpture?
